McCann Center Said, “New Year, New Me.”

McCann just upped its game.

First opened in the 1970s, the James J. McCann Center has always been a hub for Marist Athletics. As of January 2020, the 140,000 square foot facility has brand new updates that Marist students have been eagerly awaiting. Here’s what we’re most excited for:

ESPN Control Room

Several Marist alumni have gone on to work for ESPN, from broadcasting to Monday Night Football. The new McCann Center now has a state-of-the-art control room for our Sports Communications students to work in, allowing them to broadcast sports games directly to ESPN3. Make sure to catch the streamed games with commentary from your very own red foxes!

The 6,000 square foot weight room is specifically designed for use by our 23 NCAA Division I teams. It has 15 Power Lift double sided racks for Olympic-style weight lifting (whatever that means) and a 40-yard speed track for sprinting and agility training. Perhaps even more impressive than that, though, is the speaker system. With 36 overhead speakers and 8 subwoofers, our red foxes are sure to be working out in style.

Fitness Center

If you’re not an athlete but are still looking for a space to stay in shape, don’t worry. The gem of the second floor is the Fitness Center, intended for use by any Marist student. At 7,500 square feet, it features 44 pieces of cardiovascular equipment, as well as plate-loaded circuit pieces, and dumbbells. It’s the perfect setup to keep those 2020 resolutions.

And here’s the perfect place to ignore your 2020 resolutions. From burrito bowls to hot dogs to warm pretzels, the McCann cafe has everything you need for watching the game. Also featuring some delicious smoothies, it’s the perfect place to grab a bite to eat with your friends after a workout.

Indoor Track

If you’re like me, and the circuit pieces look more like weird modern art rather than exercise equipment, perhaps the track is more your speed. This elevated 133 meter three-lane track allows for dozens of students to work out at once. The only downside? Now I can’t use the cold weather as an excuse to not run.

Recreational Gym

We can all agree that sports are fun, right? However, with 23 NCAA D1 teams on campus, it’s hard to not be ever-so-slightly intimidated by the McCann Arena. For students who aren’t Division I athletes but still want to play a pickup game with friends, the brand new Rec gym is perfect. With two full-sized basketball courts, there’s plenty of space for all your most ridiculous trick shots.

Physical Therapy Facility

The second floor also features space operated by the Marist Doctorate of Physical Therapy program. The evaluation and treatment room features four training tables and modality carts. Students who hurt themselves while exercising in the Fitness Center can go to the consultation room to rehabilitate their injuries.

The Pro Shop

Finally– the Marist Bookstore was tired of seeing me so often. Now for any of your school spirit needs, you can head over to the McCann shop and peruse the selection of tees, hoodies, and more. Official Nike apparel is sold specifically for us red foxes!

McCann has always been a beloved cornerstone of the Marist community. Now with some killer upgrades, it’s sure to turn heads from Tenney to Fontaine.
