As the semester is coming to a close, things are getting pretty crazy on campus. 25 days to Graduation, 16 days until move-out, 12 days to finals, and 10 days until the Silver Needle Fashion Show! Yes, the fashion show is coming up quickly and as a member of the fashion department, I am very excited!

My “craziness” is centered around one event: this year’s fashion show. One of the unique things about this event is that it is completely student run.

Yes, there is a class at Marist that plans the entire fashion show.

It does not matter what grade level you are, any fashion major or minor is welcome to apply for a role in the class. Even if you are not in fashion, there are numerous opportunities for students to get involved. The fashion department auditions models at the beginning of the year to be used for freshmen, sophomore, and junior designs. They also have sign-ups for dressers and raffle and usher volunteers at the beginning of the spring semester. If none of those rolls interest you, there are even more opportunities to get involved! There are so many different aspects that go into this one show that no matter what your major or grade level is, you can be involved.

As a member of the Fashion Show Production Class, I have been a part of the thought process behind the branding of Marist Fashion and the decisions that have been made every step of the way for the fashion show: from accessory organizers to the banners and décor. Within the class, there are three teams: Communications, Production, and Creative. Each team consists of two sub-teams; I am a part of the Creative Team as a Script & Soundtrack Coordinator. Everything that you hear, whether it be during the cocktail hour, during a video, or on the runway, I have worked on. It is an exciting experience that I am lucky enough to learn from. As a Script & Soundtrack Coordinator, I have conquered a lot of new experiences. With the assistance of the Media Center faculty, I helped organize, film, and edit my first (and second) video; I attended my first ever photo shoot and will soon attend my very first fashion show.

Through Marist and the Fashion Department, I have been able to challenge myself and step outside my comfort zone. Even as a freshman, I have been able to get the hands-on learning experience necessary for going into the industry.

I can honestly say that I cannot wait until the fashion show!

Hope to see you there!

It’s not just the graduates who are leaving campus this May of 2013 with tear-soaked cheeks and wishes of more time here at Marist; the feeling is shared amongst all classes. No matter whom you run into on campus, most fill your ears with tales of their wonderful experiences throughout the year and how much they are—sorry Mom and Dad—dreading going home and having to live away from all of their friends for the summer. Freshman student Shannon McCormack even decided to spend her summer season working on campus, and shares her perspective about how she surprised herself with this decision:

“A few months ago if someone had asked me what I was looking forward to this summer my answer would have been home cooked meals, spending time with family, and no shower shoes. Instead my summer is going to consist of me earning money, learning to cook my own food, tanning by the river, exploring Poughkeepsie, and still wearing shower shoes.”

McCormack also comments about why she chose to remain on campus,

“I love the independence that college brings and I am very excited to extend it into the summertime! I know that this summer is going to help me grow in so many ways and that it will be a unique adventure. It is going to be strange being on campus without my friends, but that is what weekend road trips are for! I look forward to the great memories and experiences that living on my own this summer will bring!”

Pat Rynkowski, sophomore, also tells of his decision to live in the Poughkeepsie area to work on campus instead of returning home this summer:

“I decided I could be more productive and feel more positive about myself by staying at Marist and working. I am also on a sports team at Marist and I will be able to practice with some of the various people who are also staying at Marist.”

Photo: Hudson Valley Magazine

There is something magnetic about Marist’s campus. Besides the glorious view of the sunset, the leaves of autumn, the flowers at springtime, and the lively spirit that is ever-present on campus, there is something that continues to draw in students here…enough to make them not want to leave, even for the longest, hottest break of the year!

My senior year of high school went by in a whirlwind of college tours and trying to see where I belonged for the next four years. Committing to Marist after almost a year and a half of the college search felt like a huge weight leaving my shoulders. It was such a relief to finally know where I was going and know that I made the right choice. From the second my dad showed me a picture of the Marist campus my sophomore year of high school I knew it was where I wanted to be. I’m still so happy that I committed to Marist and get to spend the next two years here.

But after you commit to Marist, the excitement isn’t over! Now, you have orientation to look forward to, joining the Facebook groups and seeing who shares the same major and interests as you, shopping to decorate your room (or is this an exclusively girly interest?), and finding out who your roommate is in August. At orientation, your awesome Orientation Leaders will fill you in on everything you need to know as a Marist students, leading you around campus. You also get to see all the freshman residence halls and figure out where you belong in the mix. It’s an amazing opportunity to meet your fellow Red Foxes and get a jump-start on making the friends who you’ll learn to lean on for the next four years.

The Facebook groups are also an awesome way to meet new people and build your support system for the upcoming year. Check out the Facebook page for the Class of 2017 where you guys can see who has the same major, who’s hometown is close to yours, who wants to join the same clubs, and be reassured that everyone else has the same nerves and jitters that you do.

The summer before your freshman year at Marist is busy with preparations and stocking up in order to make the most of your space in your dorm room. Living in a freshman residence hall means getting creative with storage and picking bright and versatile bedding that can double as seating for you and your friends for movie nights and a cozy place to rest after a long day of studying. As the most loyal Target customer in America, I would definitely recommend heading over there for cheap storage options to create additional space under your bed for your food and clothes (and I guess you could go to Bed, Bath, and Beyond and the Container Store if you wanted to). For my freshman year I ordered a bedding set from Residence Hall Linens. In the set, I got my comforter, my sheets, my bath towels, an egg crate, a hamper, and every other dorm essential all in one package. It was perfect for freshman year and there were a bunch of different patterns and colors to choose from.

As the summer winds down your anticipation will peak again as you get your residence hall assignments and your roommate contact information. This is the perfect time to coordinate who is bringing what to your room whether it be the carpet, the fridge, the microwave, or the TV. It’s a huge comfort to get to know who you’re going to spend the next year living with before you finally move in.

As you guys can see, even after committing to Marist there’s still a ton of things to look forward to and prepare for. The next four years will be whirlwind and this summer will fly by as you prepare for you time here at Marist. So good luck and see you on campus in the fall!

For some more tips check out this great Huffington Post article about some of the top things you can’t forget at home.

Send BMAC Down Under fans, I DID IT!!! I got shortlisted as one of only 25 people IN THE WORLD to advance to the next round of potentially becoming THE CHIEF FUNSTER for Sydney, Australia!!!!!!! THANK YOU to EVERYONE for following my campaign and supporting me! I wouldn’t have gotten this far without your love. Thank you for sharing the information and spreading the buzz about this contest and my campaign!!! A HUGE thank you to the contest judges at Tourism Australia for selecting me as one of the 25 shortlisted contestants. I am thankful and honored to have gotten this far… but the contest isn’t over yet!

I am already halfway through the second round. I have one week left to complete the “referee challenge”. After I found out I got shortlisted in the top 25, I received an email from Tourism Australia detailing the rest of the contest. Here’s what they told me for the next challenge:

The past few days have been a whirlwind. As soon as I read all the details for the next round, it was go time! There was minimal time to celebrate and it was time to get down to business. You have to be one hundred percent in it to win it. “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.” Well ladies and gentlemen, I’m not sure about you, but I don’t have time to suffocate, which means that every breath I took from the moment I received that email has been dedicated to this round. I have been getting over a bad sinus infection and it’s allergy season, plus I am in the last 3 weeks of my senior year of college, but nothing has stopped me from telling the tale of Send BMAC Down Under to anyone who will listen and getting what I need to have people support me and endorse me. Most of the grunt work has been done this past week, so there will be more news flowing in this week, but here’s a taste of what I’ve done so far…

The Send BMAC Down Under “street team” set out to the Walkway Over The Hudson this past weekend to spread the word about me making it to top 25 and what the next round consists of. I printed out notecards that had all the information about my social media campaign on them and how people could help spread the word about Send BMAC Down Under. It was a beautiful day and I didn’t want to just walk up to people and disturb their enjoyable afternoon walk, so I bought 2 helium tanks and balloons as a way to grab people’s attention and have them come over to us. My friends Sarah and Eric came along with me to help me blow up the balloons, talk about the contest and tell my story. We were a real hit! In only 1 hour, I passed out over 100 notecards to people and we went through 2 helium tanks worth of balloons! We stood at the beginning of the walkway and wrote “Send BMAC Down Under” on the balloons so that people would wonder where the balloons were coming from and want to know why the balloons said what they did. We had a bunch of people ask why we were there and everyone was really supportive of the contest and wished me luck! People were pleasantly surprised when they found out the balloons were free! They thought we were fundraising, but nope! The sole purpose of the street team in action was to take advantage of the beautiful sunny day and spread the good news about the best job in the world contest and getting me to the next round.

It was such a fun day! By the time we left the walkway, we were wicked tired and got lemonades at the stand on the way home. The Send BMAC Down Under will be back in action again this week! Be sure to keep an eye out on twitter for when we’ll be out again and where you can find us/meet me and hear the tale of Send BMAC Down Under! In the meantime, my “press secretary” (my beautiful mother, Tracy MacLeod), “campaign manager” (one of my best friends, Mark Gamarra) and I will be calling, emailing, tweeting (and anything else we can think of) news, radio & TV stations to pick up my story to be featured in the news. The more coverage I get of the contest and my story, the better my chances are of getting to the next round! Do you know of anyone who could report and broadcast the tale of Send BMAC Down Under? Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I’m doing everything I can to spread the word but the more buzz that is created around me and my story, the better. Holla at ya girl if you think you can help! Message me on my campaign Facebook www.Facebook.com/Send.BMAC.Down.Under

Curious to see the success of my social media campaign before round 2 started? Check out the infographic that sophomore Melissa Andrews made of all the stats on my campaign! Send BMAC Down Under is now on Instagram (sendbmacdownunder) and Vine (Send BMAC Down Under)! Be sure to follow me there!

I wouldn’t be BMAC if I didn’t keep it poppin in the second round of the contest, so yesterday I made, edited and posted a parody video called “I’m Bringin Sydney Back” YUP! You definitely want to check it out!

Anything and everything the Marist community can do to help me would be greatly appreciated! I wouldn’t have gotten this far without all of you! I was one of 600,000 to apply. Now I only need to pass 24 more people to make it to Chief Funster, but the competition is fierce! Tweet your allegiance to @BMAC_DownUnder with #SendBMacDownUnder. Share my Facebook page on your Facebook and be sure to “like” it! Don’t forget to watch my YouTube channel and I post something new on my blog every day! Thank you for your help and support, Marist! GO RED FOXES!!!

It’s a common sight to see the Marist “M” on students’ sweatshirts, folders and other Marist gear around campus. One peculiar place some might not expect to look for the Marist “M” is across the river. On a clear day down by the docks or by Gartland Commons, you might be able to see the outline of the Marist “M” on the cliffs across the Hudson River. The Marist graduating class of 1970 first sketched the “M” on the cliffs and over the years the “M” has gone through many different renovations.

The next class to contribute to the “M” was the 1983 graduating class who decided to add a much more personal touch. The brave members of this class decided to take on the challenge of added the year 1983 to the “M.” The Marist “M” does not just signify the daring members of various graduating classes that decided to really leave their mark on the cliff, it represents a greater school spirit.

The Marist “M” on the Hudson River bank is especially meaningful to both the men and women crew teams. Other crew teams have left their school letters on the rocks down the river, so the Marist crew team decided to leave their mark as well. The crew team wanted to mark their territory across the river and intimidate the challenging teams.

The team of members from the 1970 class had a very methodical way of ensuring the safety of their peers that were scaling the cliff from the ropes tied to the trees above. The smaller men were propelled from the cliff from ropes, which were being supported by the other, stronger people on top of the cliff. According to “The Circle” article in 1988, “The Story Behind the M on the River’s Bank,” Steve Caiola and Donny Magowski, who are graduates from the 1970 class, completed most of the actual painting of the original M on the cliff.

Even where you least expect it, there is Marist pride all over this campus. I absolutely love knowing that when I leave Marist College, on the unfortunate, sad, sad day, there will be hundreds of other Red Foxes to network with to get my dream job. I think knowing the history about Marist is very important to continue to express your Marist spirit. Without the past memories and outstanding events at Marist College, it wouldn’t be the beautiful place that it is today.

According to “The Story Behind the M on the River’s Bank,” there have been members from each of the six consecutive years adding their years to the original design on the cliff. Now that it is late into the spring semester, seniors only have a few days left before they venture off into the real world. Some seniors might want to leave their own mark on their second home before they officially leave Marist College. I guess, the rest of the Marist Community just has to wait to see what is in store from the graduating class of 2013.

If you would like to read the original “The Circle” article check out the link below. Also both our Men and Women’s Crew Team won the MAAC championship over this past weekend. Congratulations!!

Tired of the Cafeteria food? Want something within walking distance to eat? Here is a list of 16 food places within walking distance from campus! So sit back, take a look, and see what you like!

Looking for Italian? Cosimo’s is your place. Take a right out of the main entrance of Marist and you’ll be staring at this beautiful Italian restaurant.

Craving something spicy or some good old fajitas? Mole Mole is right for you! Walk across the street and take a left after the gas station on the corner, and you’ll see Mole Mole nestled into the wall, behind Campus Deli. They deliver as well.

Looking for a delicious sandwich, a place to sit, and maybe some cold Arizona Iced Teas? Go to Red Fox Eatery- directly across the street, first door on the left by the gas station! They deliver too!

Up late studying? Dying for an egg sandwich, a cheesesteak or really any sandwich you can imagine? Go to Campus Deli, directly across the street near the gas station. Before you leave Marist, try…. the infamous Campus Deli “Heart Attack” sandwich. They too, deliver.

Three words: General. Tso’s. Chicken. Dying for Chinese food, and don’t feel like waiting hours on end? Yeung Ho II is the perfect place for you. Decently quick service, great prices, and within walking distance [or you can get it delivered].

Looking for some half prices apps, or maybe some fun trivia to play with your friends? Go to Applebees and have some wings, split a dinner, and dominate trivia with your friends.

Chicken. Bacon. Ranch. Before you leave Marist, you MUST have a slice of what some has described as “a slice of heaven”. Where can you get this delectable slice or other purely amazing pizza? Where can you also get BUFFALO CHICKEN pizza, PENNE VODKA pizza and basically just about anything you want on a slice? P-Ridge Pizza is pure joy, and a place all students must experience at least one. They deliver too :]

McDonald’s across the street, near the Home Depot, is open 24 hours. Enough said.

Drained from studying and in dire need of some coffee or a nice muffin? Starbucks is directly across the street from campus!

Hot dog fan? Maybe you love to get creative with your toppings, or you just want some of the best fries in the Hudson Valley. Soul Dog located right on Main Street in Poughkeepsie has consistently been named one of the best eats in the Hudson Valley area.

Want a scrumptious deli sandwich but tired from walking to get there? Take a seat, relax, and let K&D Deli take care of all of your food cravings.

Chicken. Fish. Pizza. Pasta. Need I say more? Scamper across the street to Giacomo’s and let their Italian magic fill your belly and make your dining experience the best it can be. Located next to the Starbucks, about 200 feet from the McDonald’s.

Want a sub you’re familiar with? Go to Quizno’s. Located next to the McDonald’s.

One of my personal favorites: PALACE DINER. It’s a diner, so it has basically everything you could dream of having. My recommendation, and a common local favorite? The Red Fox Wrap :]. Walk across the street towards the gas station, make a right and walk up the hill. You will see St. Francis on your left, and will be greeted with a giant glowing Palace Diner sign in front of you. It’s not a mirage, once you’re up the hill you’ve found the oasis!

Looking for a burger, a wrap, or maybe some sweet chili ? Head down to Lola’s , just about a mile from campus! Walk to the Mid-Hudson Walking Bridge, keep walking straight until you see a gas station straight ahead, look to your left and Lola’s is directly across!

Technically, the Poughkeepsie Train Station is within walking distance from campus.. so if you’re craving really anything, head down there. You will be greeted with AMAZING Italian food from Amici’s , some of my favorite Irish foods from Mahoney’s Pub and another personal favorite.. SUSHI from Akari!

From one food lover to hopefully another, take advantages of all the food places within walking distance from our beloved Marist College. Stop at any of these, and you will not be disappointed!

Stay Classy, Red Foxes

How To Get an Internship: Marist Style

Yes, the title of this blog is a “Gangnam Style” reference but I am not going to sing to you in a different language or attempt to make a political parody. I’m here to talk to you about something that I believe is one of the most important factors in a college experience: internships.

Last year, as a high school senior touring schools, not really sure about a major quite yet, I was looking for a school where I would be able to intern as soon as possible to figure out if I was headed in the right direction and in the right industry. One of the reasons I decided on Marist College was because they offer internship guidance in as early as your freshman year.

In my second semester as a Red Fox, I started the internship process. It was one of the most valuable things I will take away from my freshman year because it gave me a glimpse of what my job search after college will entail and allowed me to go through the interview process with real companies.

So without further ado, here is my how-to on internships!

Step 1:

Pay attention to what aspects of your major you enjoy, what you would like to learn more about, and even what you dislike. Knowing your relationship with different aspects of your major will allow you to make decisions that will further you in a favorable direction.

Step 2:

Begin building a resume! I know you have been told to keep track of every leadership activity, every notable club, every sports achievement throughout high school and you probably never actually wrote it down (I know I didn’t). If you did, great! You can put it in this nifty template provided by Marist College Career Services and add all of your more recent accomplishments and activities:

http://www.marist.edu/careerservices/resumes.html

If you do not already have a resume, start thinking! Brainstorm a list of everything you have done over the past year or two and use the template for formatting.

Step 3:

Start building a sample cover letter for a job position that you might be interested in. Career Services offers several samples online with different formatting and scenarios: http://www.marist.edu/careerservices/correspond.html#cov

Step 4:

Once you have a draft of your resume and cover letter, log into FoxQuest to schedule a resume review or a cover letter appointment with one of our lovely Career Services counselors. They can offer a lot of great information on what each industry looks for in a resume and cover letter (and they’re just really great people)!

https://marist-csm.symplicity.com/students/index.php?s=home

Step 5:

Revise resume and cover letter and schedule an appointment with the internship coordinator for your department.

Some departments require you to fill out a supplementary internship request form usually found online or outside the internship coordinator’s office. There may also be other supplements so make sure to check it out with a department secretary or the internship coordinator.

Step 6:

Send out emails! In most cases, the internship coordinator will supply you with email contacts for internships at different companies. For each email your cover letter serves as the body and the resume is attached to the email in PDF form. Make sure to put the internship term and title in the subject box.

Step 7:

Wait for replies! I have to say that the waiting in between emails is the hardest part of the process because you want to know if you have a shot. Don’t sweat it! Most companies reply within a business day, however it is common to wait three to four days before sending a follow-up email to be “politely persistent”.

Step 8:

Set up interviews with companies that have replied. It is very helpful to leave one free day during the school week if you are looking for a summer internship in a different town. This way, you are available to travel to interviews without class conflicts.

Step 9:

Interview! Make sure to dress professionally, be on time, and come prepared with several copies of your resume, cover letter, and any related projects or portfolios that are relevant to the job. Always have a pen and your schedule just in case!

Step 10:

Send a thank you email to the people who have interviewed you immediately after you arrive home. It leaves a good impression when they know that you understand how valuable their time is. If the company is one of your top choices you can also send a thank you note in the mail.

Step 11:

Wait for decisions! This is the absolute hardest part. Just know that you gave it your best shot and think positively! Most companies will get back within the week.

Step 12:

Bring the offer to your internship coordinator to get approved and go over ay items that need to be addressed.

Step 13:

Formally accept the internship through email and set up start and end dates.

Step 14:

Visit career services to register for your internship!

So there you have it: how to get an internship in fourteen steps. I hope this helps you to get an internship of your own!

Good luck!

You grow up thinking that somebody loves something as much as you do. Others respect all the streets that you have walked, the places you have gone, the memories you have made by a mutual love for this place. No place says home to me unlike the city of Boston, a place I so rarely see since I came to Marist. Just because I am not there physically, does not mean it is ever far from my heart. To me, going into Boston is one of the most excited things. People have a love and a passion for a city that not only takes from them, but gives back to them as well. My roots to Boston are strong; my father’s parents grew up in Boston, and eventually married and had my father, an Everett native his entire life. My mother, was born and raised in Belmont, and after they got married, they spent the first few years of the marriage living just outside of Boston. Once they started having children (I am the third of four), they moved about an hour south to the suburbs.

Growing up in the suburbs was a different experience for me, I grew up wishing I could live in Boston, going to Celtics games in The Garden, walking down Newbury Street. Even now, at the age of 21 in a world of uncertainty, I know I want to live in Boston. My youth was frequent with visits to my grandparent’s house, driving through Boston, always past The Garden and under the Tobin Bridge. Family trips to the city were cherished, and when I was in elementary school, my father took me to my first Celtics game. When the Bruins won the Stanley Cup, I was in Boston at the crack of dawn on the Parade Route with thousands and thousands of others who shared my love for this place. Boston is a city that sells itself, taking the heart of people who pass through it. Even those who are members of the intense rivalry between New York and Boston teams, often express their fondness of Boston.

We as humans have experienced tragedy. My experience with it; however, has been limited, until today. My oldest sister was there to take in the Boston Marathon, the joy of watching take part of something greater than themselves. My other sister works extremely close to where everything occurred, and before I knew the exact location of her office, I had been sitting in class realizing I had no idea what either of them were doing that day or where they were. Then, I began walking towards the post office on campus and checked my phone to see that my father had called to leave a voicemail. In a way, I feared what he had to say, knowing that my family has so many ties to Boston, the last thing I ever wanted to do was hear a phone call saying something happened to one of them. Fortunately, I am able to say that my family is fine, the only damage done, is the damage done to the rest of the country. Faith shaken again, spirits down but not necessarily out.

Hearing the reports that the runners who participated in the Boston Marathon kept running to Mass General Hospital to give blood released the sense of sickness I was having throughout my entire body. These people are the definition of selfless, and heroic, along with the men and women in uniform who responded from all over Boston. It is a symbol of what we all must do in a time in which Boston has almost been managed to knock down a peg. We must all keep running. (Or walking, whichever you prefer on a daily basis). I have always held up my head when saying I am from Massachusetts, and that Boston is my city. You can laugh at how the funny accents, you can make fun of us for having rotary’s, or for saying the word wicked. But you cannot, nor will we let you, take away what it means to be from Boston.

We just hope that you’ll be standing alongside us, as we recapture that magic of Boston, and remember that an entire city of people out number the person who caused the events on April 15th.

One city, one love, one community.

Saturday morning at 6 am our bused rolled out of Piazza dell’Indipendenza. The two busses were filled with tired LDM students who deep down couldn’t wait to get to Lake Como. After four hours on the bus and a quick break at a rest stop we arrived in Lake Como. The busses stopped right in front of the Lake which was a stunning view. We had about three hours to explore the town. We quickly found the market that ran through the heart of the town, and the main cathedral in the center. The cathedral was much darker than many of the other churches I have seen being abroad but it was still breathtaking.

After we followed the market and windowed shopped for an hour. We got a slice of pizza for lunch and then headed to the dock. We walked out on the dock that runs straight through the center of the lake, it brought us closer to the stunning views and with the weather being warm and sunny it was a pleasant change from the weather in Florence. We drove around the side of the lake and headed to our ferry to take us to the town at the center of the lake. Here we took pictures at a point in the middle of the lake.

We took a nice ferry ride back and once we all boarded the bus again we were off to Switzerland! As we started winding up the mountain we watched as the temperature outside drop on the thermostat. We stopped on the side of the road for some beautiful pictures of the snow and mountains and then headed to our hotel in St. Moritz. St Moritz is a private ski area that is split between the town and the mountain. Once we checked in to our room we all noticed we had views of the mountains from our rooms. At 8:00 we had our dinner, this comes with the trips. It was a four course meal and it was so yummy!

Later that night we walked into town, it was not as cold as we expected and seeing the mountains at night was breathtaking. Sunday we got up early for breakfast and at 9 headed for our walking tour of St. Moritz by a local guide who showed us the ins and outs of the town. The tour ended at a chocolate factory! To get back to Italy we took the Bernina express which is a train that runs through the Alps. Our train ride brought us to the highest altitude a train can go too. We were feet away from walls of snow, as we descended the snow disappeared into the background and it became much warmer. We got off the train in Torinno, a small town that has the Alps as their backdrop and a large central market for an hour we got to explore. After getting some street food we boarded our bus again to head back to Florence. It was a long drive to the rest stop but once we got back on after it was only a couple more hours till Florence. It was a long but amazing 2 days!
